Many first-time leaders struggle to earn the respect of their teams, especially when they are promoted from within. Former colleagues may still see them as peers, not leaders, which leads to resistance, lack of cooperation, and frustration. Trying to demand respect by authority alone often backfires, leaving the leader feeling overwhelmed and isolated.
True leadership is not about position. It’s about influence. Respect is earned by moving beyond authority and building strong relationships, producing results, and investing in people’s growth. By doing this, first-time leaders can steadily gain influence and, eventually, genuine respect.
